We all know that Scuba Diving is a very relaxing and enjoyable sport,
but did you know that it’s good for your health, mind, body AND soul?
Here are 5 reasons showing why this is true:
- Physical Fitness
There are a lot of reasons why scuba diving increases overall
physical fitness. Scuba diving on a regular basis steadily maintains and
improves your general fitness and stamina levels. Exercising in water
is very effective, because of the natural resistance water has against
our bodies, especially when we kick our legs to fin and propel ourselves
in the water. It has been shown that scuba diving can burn as many as
500 calories within an hour!
Divers have to be able to support the weight of their scuba gear when
they are moving to land, they are constantly building muscles in their
legs and back. Increased muscles help to relieve tension and it improve
ailments such as backache, because by strengthening the back muscles,
pressure is reduced on the spine.
- Meditative breathing
Slow and deep breathing is an important factor in scuba diving, to
help optimise air consumption and bottom time. An extra bonus is that
deep, steady breathing promotes a calm attitude and reduces the risk of a
lung over-expansion injury, for example.
Similar to breathing during meditation, breathing deeply and slowly
while diving includes a calm, relaxed state while the diver focuses on
the underwater environment rather than thinking about problems they may
experience in daily life. A calm, relaxed state of mind has been proven
to promote a positive attitude and prevent depression.
- Healing effects of water
People are often submersed in water to calm down or to be healed.
Water has a funny way of making us feel restored and healed. As an
example, watching fish in an aquarium has a relaxing effect on the mind.
Comparing this to actually being in the underwater environment these
calming effects will be even more intensified. This is one of the many
reasons divers keep going back for more. They find it a great way to
relax, unwind and forget about the stress of their daily lives.
- Marine life encounters
Watching marine life creates a connection that most divers will never
forget. The wonder, awe and pure pleasure of being up close to amazing
marine creatures produces a feeling of increased well-being. This
feeling is strengthened when we have an encounter with a species we feel
particular respect for, or a certain attraction to, such as sea turtles
or sharks.
5. Healthy diving buddies
When you dive, you will meet other like-minded people who often
become good friends as you all share the same great interest. It’s very
easy to make friends as you will find a sense of community among divers.
It’s an exhilarating feeling to surface from a dive full of great
memories of your experience and to be able to talk about it and share
them with good companions who are just excited about it as you are!
